How do you keep a focus on long-term goals?

• Create a list of goals. Motivation requires a targeted approach.

Be a front-runner and form mental habits now which will help you later on. Here are a couple of habits you may try to master. Here is how to keep focus on your goals:

•    Have an experiment-driven life. This is about risk, being willing to fail because you're failing forward. The more experiments you make the better. Stand up again, never be afraid of a tumble over setbacks as this is only temporarily.

•    Observe more what is going on around you. If you observe more, you learn more and you get a better view of human behavior, that gives you power. As an example, learning body language which comprises the movement of the main body (hands, posture etc.) and the facial expressions.

•    Grow an Attitude of wisdom. Be very careful to not develop the so-called competence "I know a lot about that" - You are never too old to learn. The pursuit of wisdom is one of the absolute goals of people seeking to live the good life. The Scriptures have a lot to teach us about wisdom. Always ponder your life with curiosity and openness and embrace the challenge.

•    Do what you love.  Success might wait around the corner for you.  But be careful; do not do something just because you're good at it - that doesn't mean you should do it. Do what you are passionate about. What are you born to do?" When are you the happiest?

The brain you can focus and concentrate with, and the other part of your brain is not under your direct control, the part that works on things in the background. The right side of the brain remembers the big picture; the left side of the brain recalls the details. A 2008 study at the American Institute of Behavioral Research and Technology showed that if these four core areas are developed, the brain's ability to innovate is enhanced.—The capture of new ideas, to be engaged in challenging tasks, when knowledge are broadened, and when one is surrounded by stimulating people and places.  The more you shift between both sides, the more complex a creative a thinker you can be.

​Self-discipline is a very importand habit we all need. No success will ever be achieved without, and no goal will be reached. Below are some tips and strategies shared in our brainstorming session. Thank you to all who participated. What can you add to the list? Please comment below.

Get up and Get at 'em
​Getting up early and out of the bed at the first call of the alrm and bringing the dog for a walk is a great way to increase self discipline. You're up, you're out of bed and you've gotten some fresh air - so the cobwebs are blown off. You can then go home, get your cup of joe and get cracking on whatever it is you need to do, happy in the knowledge you've not spent half an hour wasting time thinking about how tired you are. -Cormac, My Online Marketer

Here are a couple things I do to help with self-discipline.
​The first is to make a morning routine. My days often get away from me, but not usually in the first hour. So whatever I find difficult to work into my day, but important to do so, is what I do first. For me, that means exercise. The first thing I do is a suite of stretches. The second thing I do is push-ups. Then I get hungry. which is quite another story.

The other thing I do is reduce temptation. When my mother-in-law bakes tempting treats and leaves them on the counter, I remove them. I hide them. Otherwise, I would take a little slice "just to taste it" every time I pass by. Unfortunately, I don't always hide the treats and I do sometimes take a taste. Hiding treats is a great way to exercise self-discipline...as long as the place you hide them is not in your mouth. -David Leonhardt, THGM Writers

Cultivating Self Discipline
In my experience self-discipline isn’t about consistently doing something. It is about knowing what you truly want and identifying realistically what changes it will take to get there. ​Timing
I try to walk 90 mins a day - I find I MUST walk at least 40 mins before breakfast, or I never do ANY.
I try to count calories - If I deviate even a small bit early in the day, I end up blowing 2 days calories in one.

Want to live a positive, happy life?

Focus on the positive. There is a positive aspect in every person. In every situation, there is something good. Be on the outlook for it. Sometimes this is hard as it is not always obvious..

Appreciate what is around you. Gratitude can increase happiness.
#WelcomeHapppiness If you want to live a happy life, negative people CANNOT surround you.  Rid your life of all the negative people and things in it. This will not be easy. Take a step back and examine which behaviors and people you should let go.... Learn to focus on the positive and let go of the negative. 

Focus on the positive. There is a positive aspect in every person. In every situation, there is something good. Be on the outlook for it. Sometimes this is hard as it is not always obvious.. ​


Different actions to attract happiness 
-       Appreciate what is around you. Gratitude can increase happiness. It can also protect you from stress and negativity. Focus on the good parts of your day, and your positivity will grow.

-       Mindfulness, (to focus non-judgmental on the present moment) is an effective way in which manner stress can be reduced and increase self-awareness gained.

-       Do well to other people. To do good is an essential ingredient to being happy, and visa verse. Giving to others? This releases endorphins, activating the parts of our brains that are associated with trust and forgiveness. When you find it in your heart to forgive someone, you let go of the damage and unhappiness that held you captive. More space will be opened for more happiness to flow in.

-       Live at the moment. Happiness is only possible in the present moment. Live in the present means to know of every little thing we do at this moment.

-       Spiritual. Religious as well as spiritual people have higher levels of happiness and mental well-being. 

-       Healthy diet and lifestyle.
Happiness is good for your health. And vice versa. Exercise,  do not smoke, eat a balanced diet, and make sure you get enough sleep. People who are optimistic may be more likely life a healthy lifestyle because they know it is good for them and will help them towards achieving their goals. Take care of your health and wellness. It is very important to break down a goal into smaller, measurable steps.
Here are habits you may try to master:

•    Hold on to your faith in God. Faith is the only way we can withstand the worst unexpected events in our lives even if we don’t understand it ourselves, keeping us optimistic.

•    Stop thinking in extremes: Do not think about the future in terms of dramatic disasters and failures. Accept that most of life comprises gray areas as well; it is not always black or white.

•    Avoid the snowball effect: If having negative thoughts, don’t nurture it, don’t grow them bigger and over generalize it but instead focus on how you should deal with these new circumstances in your life.

•    Don’t minimize the positive. Continuous negative thoughts will stop you from seeing the positive when it happens. Do not minimize your successes! Remember that setbacks are only temporarily.


•    Focus outwards: By adding positivity to another person’s life, you too can start to be better and more optimistic again. Be kind, give compliments, and just be there.

•    Write your positive affirmations, read it. After you read it, you should say it. When you say it, you hear it. When you hear it, you make it your own it. When you take ownership of it, circumstances change.

From the time we were kids we were programmed by words that were spoken to us and experiences that happened to us. The ONLY way that other people will ever believe in you is if you have proven yourself. This is what exceptional people are known by.  Here are a couple things to consider:
  • The best indicator of the future is the past. So people look at your track record to decide for themselves if you will succeed or not.
 
  • You can only get judged by your actions and not by what you are thinking. Your actions, not your thoughts. So it doesn’t matter what awesome plans you have, people can only see your actions which they will use to decide if you will fail or not.
 
  • The best way to make people believe in your abilities is when you have something to show for it. Something that can serve as proof that you can be trusted. Have a concrete plan - what steps are you going to take? What do you need to do to get there? Having your plans black on white will show people you’re serious about your new venture.
 
You need to set goals in order turn your dreams into reality.
Dreams don’t just come true - you need to set proper goals to achieve them, otherwise dreams will stay just that...dreams. You need to set realistic goals in order turn your dreams into reality. Dreams can be an inspiration to you but proper set goals will change your entire life!
 
You have to turn your dreams into goals.
Dreams are only in your mind’s eye, something you are just thinking about. Goals require action; they are real and could change your life. Every dream should be turned into long-term goals, which in turn are divided into bite- size pieces, small enough to complete one after one until your dream is reached. A Dream will always stay imaginary and will never be reached if real-time realistic goals are not set. (Proper goal setting is discussed later in this book)
 
Please don’t ever stop reaching for your dreams. Never forget that you are meant to live a life full of happiness and meaning. Do you have a dream that you are working towards now?
